Promoting Sustainable Planting Project in Ashington

8th August 2022Anne Thompson

Aydon Class took part in a community project to design posters to promote a new sustainable planting solution in Ashington.  Our pupils were delighted to see their posters transformed into signs on Ashington main street and they also received a cheque for an amazing £500 towards supporting sustainability within our school.

Dawn Watson, teacher at Castle School said,

“Our pupils have missed being able to be out and about over the past couple of years. This project allowed us to reconnect with the town and contribute to our local community. They were really enthusiastic about making the posters and were delighted to see their work transformed into the amazing signs that will be on show for all to see. The pupils are already thinking about how to spend the prize money in our school playground.”

Well done everyone and thank you to Ashington Town Council.

Occupational Therapy: Cooling ideas for the hot weather

1st August 2022Anne Thompson

Water bead neck cooler (amazon) or make your own.

  • Buy waterbeads/zorbies from eBay or amazon.
  • Put them in a container and fill with water. Wait for the beads to plum up.
  • Fill a stocking with beads to a level you are happy with. Cover the stocking with a strip of material leaving two lengths to tuck down Tshirt. Place in fridge  to cool. When the beads shrink simply place it back in a bucket of water to plump.

General Activities

  1. Try Freezing favourite fruits to crunch on e.g. grapes, blackberries, strawberries etc.  Cut the grapes and berries into quarters for safety.
  2. Freeze juice or water to make ice chunks to crunch on or crush up. If using cube trays bash the cubes into pieces before giving to the child.
  3. If children chew on their clothes wet a flannel, tie a knot in it and freeze for the child to chew on the cool flannel rather than their clothes
  4. For cuff chewers dampen sweatbands (non-fluffy/bobbly bands) place in fridge to cool and place on wrists.
  5. Dampen a headband or sweat band with water and place in fridge for forehead cooling.
  6. Use water spray bottles with cold water to spray.
  7. Make up a container or water beads, place in fridge for them to explore and cool. (DO not use these if your child eats non-food items) Place them in a ziplock bag and supervise play if they tend to eat non-food items.
  8. Make up zorbie/waterbead bottles and place in fridge to tip and watch them roll.

Jubilee Celebrations

15th June 2022Anne Thompson

A day to remember! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

We celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a whole school street party. We had the BEST time, with great food, music, dancing, singing/signing and lots of laughter. Most importantly, it felt truly special to finally be able to come together and celebrate such a special occasion as a school.

Here are some of our highlights.

The Great British Spring Clean

9th April 2022Anne Thompson

Once again, our pupils have enthusiastically taken part in The Great British Spring Clean.  Thanks to the local council, who provided everything we could possibly need, pupils were able to safely move around their school community litter picking.

Berwick Class made a plan for where they were going to litter pick and were so impressed by the litter picking already done they had to find somewhere else to go!  Thank you Castle School pupils for taking time to improve our environment.

Easter Egg Biker Run visits Castle School

8th April 2022Leanne Tonks

A huge Thank You to The Widows Sons Masonic Motorcycle Association who visited Castle School yesterday to meet the children and kindly brought an Easter egg for every child.

We also have to say a big thank you to Julie, representing the Co-op, who donated all of the Easter Eggs. We felt very privileged to be included as they resumed their annual Easter Egg Run to a few selected special schools in Northumberland.

What a fantastic morning for our pupils – they thoroughly enjoyed the visit and it was a very special experience seeing all of their amazing motorcycles – some of us even got to sit on them too!

The visit was made even more special by the genuine kindness shown to us by a group of true gentlemen who went out of their way to ensure that every child felt included.

I cannot express how grateful we are to the The Widows Sons Masonic Motorcycle Association who visited our school with their amazing bikes and the very generous gifts of Easter eggs from the Co-op for all our children brought to us by Julie. Our children got so much pleasure from seeing, hearing and sitting on the bikes and speaking to the lovely gentlemen. It was such a joy to see the excitement and sheer joy on the faces of all our children – and our staff! It was such a treat at the end of term for everyone at Castle school
Thank you so much once again – Caroline Vardy (Assistant Principal, Castle School)

Careers Day takes over at Castle School

14th March 2022Anne Thompson

At Castle School our aim is to provide all of our pupils with some insight/ understanding into the world of work at whatever level is appropriate to the needs of the individual.
Last week was National Careers Week and so on Thursday, we had a designated Careers Day!

Each class decided on a job or skill that they wanted to learn about and put up a widow display, some were sensory or interactive, for example pupils had props that they could have their photos taken with or you could take your fingerprints for the police. Our younger pupils had a ‘People Who Help Us’ theme and our older pupils focused on different jobs and the skills they used. We had window displays about gardening, working at McDonald’s, hospitality, the police, Royal Mail, education, attention skills, nurses and doctors.

During the day, classes moved around the school looking at the different displays. Some classes took part in job hunt tasks as they were going around. There was great fun and learning had by all. Feedback from our pupils was really positive and some asked when the next Careers Day would be!

World Book Day

10th March 2022Anne Thompson

Pupils at Castle School had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day. Some of our pupils came into school in fancy dress as their favourite book characters whereas others just enjoyed a day in their uniform or non uniform – whatever they felt most comfortable in. Each class enjoyed activities based around some of our favourite books in school. In the immortal words of Dr Seuss, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”
